Well, this weekend sucked for the domestic box office. Ben Affleck's Argo moved up to take the top spot (its first time at No. 1), but it was the only film this weekend to crack $10 million.
It was bad news for new releases, all of which did less than was predicted by their respective studios. Cloud Atlas, Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, Fun Size, and Chasing Mavericks were all disappointments. This is particularly grim for the $100+ million and much-hyped Cloud Atlas, which debuted in third place.
Here are the weekend estimates via Rentrak:
- Argo $12.4 million
- Hotel Transylvania $9.5 million
- Cloud Atlas $9.4 million
- Paranormal Activity $8.7 million
- Taken 2 $8 million
- Silent Hill: Revelation 3D $8 million
- Here Comes the Boom $5.5 million
- Sinister $5.1 million
- Alex Cross $5.1 million
- Fun Size $4.1 million
Chasing Mavericks, starring Gerard Butler as a surfer, couldn't even crack the Top 10, settling for 13th place with a paltry $2.2 million.
