App Store Update: December 12

Every day hundreds of new apps make their debut on the App Store, and hundreds more are updated or reduced in price. We have sifted through the noise and highlighted those select few that might be worth your attention.

Game Debuts

Stone Age: The Board Game – ($4.99)

Just yesterday we pointed out a sale on Reiner Knizia’s Lost Cities, and I recommend you check it out since it’s a board game frequently enjoyed by my own family. Well, get ready for the same opinion a second time, because the Thomas clan loves to sit down around the Stone Age board. This brilliantly balanced worker-placement game design has multiple paths to victory, encouraging experimentation and some wildly different strategies each time you play. It’s also topped the charts as a favorite among board game lovers for years. So should you pick up this all-new digital version, for just five bucks? I would if I were you. (And I’d trade all my ore to get it too.)

The Grading Game – ($0.99)

Experience the thrilling life of a teacher spending hours upon hours of their personal time sifting through stacks of term papers, red pen in hand, desperately searching for even one student with a coherent, worthwhile thought to express on the written page. Wait, this is a game?

Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator – ($2.99)

“Full speed ahead!” “Shields up!” “Fire proton torpedoes!” “Engage!” Put yourself in the shoes of a starship captain!

Roblox Mobile – (Free)

What will you build? Roblox is a user-empowering creativity-inspiring platform made for game creation, and millions of creators have already joined its community and come up with the crazy, coolest custom content this side of Minecraft. The platform is now available for free in the App Store, so check it out if you’ve got a game design idea you’ve been itching to bring to life.

eevoo – (Free)

A new augmented reality experience, eevoo invites you to join some adventurous robots and explore a parallel dimension that’s been layered on top of our real world.

Price Drops

Demons’ Score – ($0.99)

Square Enix’s Demons’ Score is one of the wildest game designs to hit the App Store this year, and one of the priciest too – when you add up all of its many different in-game purchase options with its normal $6.99 price tag. All that DLC has been price-slashed alongside the main game’s plummet down to 99 cents, though, so it’s the perfect time to check this one out if you’ve been curious about it. Take a look at our video review for more:

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light HD – ($0.99)

Square Enix has more than just demons for sale today, though, as our favorite tomb raider is also available for just under a dollar.

Worms 2: Armageddon – ($0.99)

And to make it a trio of 99-cent selections, here’s Team 17’s Worms 2: Armageddon. A free holiday season content update just went live for this one recently, too, so it’s the perfect time to take up arms against these armless annelids.

Cars 2 – (Free)

Five free options are yours for the taking today, starting with Cars 2. You might want to equip your iPad with this one in advance of any holiday season traveling – there’s nothing like playing Cars to entertain your kids while riding in the car.

Dreamworks Dash ‘n Drop – (Free)

For a more recent film tie-in, here’s the app that plays off the recently-released animated film Rise of the Guardians.

Flick Tennis: College Wars – (Free)

If it’s getting a little too cold outside for you, pretend it’s summer once again with the sunny, sporty action of Flick Tennis.

Art of Pinball: Speed King – (Free)

Or ignore the outdoors altogether, staying inside and warming yourself with the glow of the pinball table’s myriad blinking lights.

Aralon: Sword & Shadow HD – (Free)

Then again, you could always just dive into a new, lengthy RPG experience, and only emerge back out into the real world when winter’s already far behind us. “Where did the time go?”

Updates

Fieldrunners 2 HD – ($7.99)

One of our favorite tower defense designs has more new content now thanks to the release of Version 1.3. Check it out to discover new weapons, performance upgrades and Santa Claus. Yes, good old Santa shows up and bombs everything in sight. Merry Christmas!

That’s it for today! If you haven't already, subscribe to the App Store Update via email. It’s convenient!
