The top contenders Azubu Frost and KT Rolster B tie in the final series of the Intergroup matches

Azubu Frost vs. KT Rolster B

In the final match of Interleague week at OGN's The Champions Winter season, we have Azubu Frost going up against KT Rolster B, two more top contenders in the group stage. Game one started with unusual picks from both teams, who competed neck and neck, but in the end it was KTB, who emerged victorious. In game two, Frost returned to their more standard play, and crushed KTB, not dropping a single death.

Game1

AZF

Bans: Olaf, Lee Sin, Twisted Fate

Picks

  • Diana - RapidStar (mid)
  • Nunu - CloudTemplar (jungle)
  • Corki - Woong (adc)
  • Vayne - Shy (top)
  • Leona - MadLife (support)

KTB

Bans: Jayce, Rengar, Zyra

Picks

  • Lulu - Mafa (support)
  • Cho'Gath - KaKAO (jungle)
  • Irelia - Ragan (top)
  • Mordekaiser - Ryu (mid)
  • Ezreal - Score (adc)

In a game of unusual picks, it's no wonder that the game would begin with unique laning strategies. In a response to KTB's counter picks, Shy was moved mid against Ryu while RapidStar went against Ragan. What was most unusual, was CloudTemplar playing the role of a jungle/suppport hybrid, supporting Shy in the mid lane to ensure his safety. Unfortunately, it would be KTB who would gain the early advantage with first and second blood. Frost would further supplement KTB's advantage by over committing in two fights, pushing Frost on the defensive. Later in the game, Frost found their opportunity when KTB attempted baron, the ensuing fight ended in an ace for Frost, evening the gold score. After, the game saw more back and forth between the two teams, both struggling for control over the game. Finally, the equilibrium broke with Frost losing back to back fights, giving up baron, and game control. With baron, KTB pushed lanes and laid siege to Frost's base. Eventually, KTB dived, decimated Frost, and almost pushed down the nexus. Frost was able delay KTB, but it only delayed the inevitable. KTB simply waited for baron, took it, and immediately pushed, forcing themselves on to Frost, winning the fight, then the game.

Game2

AZF

Bans: Olaf, Rengar, Twisted Fate

Picks

  • Ezreal - Woong (adc)
  • Amumu - CloudTemplar (jungle)
  • Katarina - RapidStar (mid)
  • Jax - Shy (top)
  • Sona - MadLife (support)

KTB

Bans: Zyra, Blitzcrank, Diana

Picks

  • Jayce - Ryu (top) Cho'Gath - KaKAO (jungle)
  • Rumble - Ragan (top)
  • Caitlyn - Score (adc)
  • Nunu - Mafa (support)

This game we saw some standard picks. However this time, it was KTB who initiated a lane switch in an attempt to quickly accelerate the game by pushing towers. It seemed, however, that Frost was ready for this and was able to match KTB's speed in pushing. After the first towers, it would be Frost to break the ice and acquire first blood. As the game continued, Frost was able get a few more pick offs, which forced KTB to play a little more conservatively. Then, a decisive fight tipped the scales in Frost's favor, winning a 4-0 fight and taking dragon. KTB was now on the defensive, hoping for an opportunity to turn the tables. Unfortunately, Frost's play was meticulous, allowing no room for mistakes. KTB lost back to back fights which allowed Frost to take baron and increase their pressure. Frost wasted no time with baron buff and took down back to back inhibitors. Their push was halted, but after healing, Frost immediately came back for the last inhibitor. With the strength of their team, Frost was able to zone out KTB and take the last inhibitor. KTB prepared to make their last stand, but Frost took initiative and quickly dispatched KTB, winning a flawless game and tieing the series.

Match Breakdown

In Game one, Frost made an attempt at a double AD carry team composition. The problem with compositions like this, is that defensive building becomes easier so it was important for Frost to stay ahead of the game. Unfortunately, KTB took the lead and was able to snowball it to victory. In game two, Frost reverted to their standard play while it seemed KTB was attempting a strategy, exhibited by NaJin Sword, to quickly push towers and accelerate the game. While the game was relatively short, it did not go as KTB expected. Frost was able to counter KTB at every turn, picking up kills and extending their lead. Eventually, Frost's staggering lead was attributed to more than just kills, but an immense farm and tower lead. KTB was simply rendered unable to fight Frost at any level and lost horribly, without picking up a single kill.

MVP

The MVP of game one was Score. His positioning in team fights was meticulous, only giving up a single kill. With some help from his team, he was able to freely deal damage from the far edges of the fight and pick up kills, paving the way to victory.

In game two, there is no one person that stood above the others. The entire Azubu Frost team played their parts flawlessly, leading to a flawless victory. MadLife, CloudTemplar, and Shy did a good job at zoning, catching, and peeling while RapidStar made accurate judgements to jump into fights, ensuring maximum damage output. And Woong was excellent at staying in the far reaches of the fight, dealing damage and avoiding unnecessary risks. Therefore, there is no single MVP for game two as without flawless play from all members, Frost could not have created such a flawless victory.
