Know SimCity Before You Go

Server issues are slowly ironing out for SimCity, and that means more of us can enact our grand schemes. As frustrating as it has been to be barred from playing a game we've purchased, there is a silver lining: we can learn from the mistakes of those who've gone before, and start our cities with a base of knowledge that will set us up for grand success.

We asked our readers what they wished they'd known before they started playing (aside from the obvious about the server issues), and this is the advice they have to share. Have some great advice you don't see below? Shout out in the comments below and we'll update the article with your recommendations.

@ign I wish I would've known that cities didn't transfer between servers. #dumb

@ign Start with dirt roads! Saves a lot of money early and don't forget avenues as the funds become available. — Michael L (@michaelolacher) March 8, 2013

@ign check wind direction!!Doesn't help putting a stinky power plant or treatment plant...and then having wind blow into res zones! — Dave_CDN (@Ghost_2034) March 8, 2013

@ign #SimCity Limit your city's specializations to allow you the space to really focus. For drilling, I had to build multiple trade depots. — Joe Andresen (@SSUJoe) March 8, 2013

@ign Focus on building your industries first to get a good headstart financial wise. — Matthew Wheeler (@ShBoomd) March 8, 2013

@ign Curved roads look cool but massively restrict expansion #SimCity — Steven Walker (@Jestix) March 8, 2013

@ign Space your residential areas a bit so traffic doesn't get as congested going to industry and commerce areas. — Richard A (@RAmable) March 8, 2013

@ign The water tables do run out so plan ahead for future spots to move them to. Keep industry zones and waste away from good water spots.

— Richard A (@RAmable) March 8, 2013

@ign Use the maps BEFORE building. Accidentally put my garbage/recycling/power plant on top of my water table.
