The Croods Debuts Atop the Weekend Box Office

DreamWorks Animation's The Croods enjoyed a healthy debut this weekend, topping the box office with $44.7 million, just slightly ahead of what DWA's How to Train Your Dragon opened with (but with far less glowing reviews than that 2010 release).

The "Die Hard in the White House" action thriller Olympus Has Fallen was good news for its struggling star Gerard Butler, debuting in second place with a rugged $30.5 million.

The Tina Fey-Paul Rudd dramedy Admission had a soft bow in fifth place, while Spring Breakers expanded in limited release up to sixth place.

Here are the weekend Top 10 estimates via Rentrak:

  1. The Croods $44.7 million
  2. Olympus Has Fallen $30.5 million
  3. Oz the Great and Powerful $22 million
  4. The Call $8.7 million
  5. Admission $6.4 million
  6. Spring Breakers $5 million
  7. The Incredible Burt Wonderstone $4.3 million
  8. Jack the Giant Slayer $3 million
  9. Identity Thief $2.5 million
