The Butler Repeats as No. 1 at the Weekend Box Office

Last weekend's champ Lee Daniels' The Butler remained the No. 1 movie at the North American box office this weekend with $17 million, while The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones enjoyed the biggest but not particularly best debut among the crop of new releases with a third place finish of $9.3 million.

The Mortal Instruments opened Wednesday and has earned $14 million since then, a poor showing for the would-be franchise starter.

Director Edgar Wright's The World's End opened in fourth place with $8.9 million, opening in half the theaters that The Mortal Instruments did and yet was right on its heels all weekend.

The horror film You're Next debuted in seventh place with an estimated $7.1 million; some industry pundits had predicted it could open in first place.

Here are the weekend estimates via Rentrak:

1. Lee Daniels' The Butler $17 million

2. We're The Millers $13.5 million

3. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones $9.3 million

4. The World's End $8.9 million

5. Planes $8.6 million

6. Elysium $7.1 million

7. You're Next $7.1 million

8. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters $5.2 million

9. Blue Jasmine $4.3 million

10. Kick-Ass 2 $4.3 million
