FOX will be remaking the UK hit Broadchurch. The creator of the original series, Chris Chibnall, will be executive producing the new version, which will be part of FOX’s new “event series” (AKA miniseries) slate, which also includes 24: Live Another Day and M. Night Shyamalan’s Wayward Pines.
The UK’s most-watched new drama of the year, Broadchurch was a murder mystery starring Doctor Who’s David Tennant and Olivia Colman. The original series is actually just about to begin airing in the US on BBC America starting on August 7th.
The new version will, unsurprisingly, be set in an American town and, per the press release, “follows the tragic and mysterious death of a young boy found dead on an idyllic beach surrounded by rocks and a jutting cliff-face, from where he may have fallen. Although the cause of his death remains unsolved, the picturesque seaside town where the tragedy occurred is at the heart of a major police investigation and a nationwide media frenzy.”
The new version may be not be called Broadchurch, which is currently referred to as a working title.
“Broadchurch is the kind of storytelling that grabs your attention and keeps you riveted with every minute – which is exactly what we look for in an event series,” said Kevin Reilly, Chairman of Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. “We love the layered characters, we’ve seen how well-received it’s been in the U.K., and we’re lucky to be able to bring a new version of this mystery to the U.S. audience.”
It would be amusing if the American version took a page from AMC’s upcoming remake of the UK series Low Winter Sun and actually cast Tennant as an American version of the same character – just as Mark Strong is doing reviving his Cold Winter sun role.
