Google has recently made a push for increased games sales on its Android mobile operating system. And according to a report from IDC and App Annie, it appears downloads on Google Play have now outpaced Nintendo's 3DS and Sony's PS Vita game sales combined.
The report covers game revenue for the second quarter of 2013. During the first quarter, handheld gaming devices maintained a second-place position behind Apple's iOS App Store. But according to IDC and App Annie, Google Play has now slid into second, with Android and iOS collectively selling four times the amount of games as the 3DS and PS Vita.
While the report doesn't include ad-generated revenue found on mobile titles, it's important to note the report does factor in both packaged and digital software sales for handhelds. And while the second quarter lacks the boost of post-holiday sales found in the first quarter of the year, there's no denying the results of Google's push in the games market, and the apparent staying power of iOS in the handheld space.
