The Comics Run: August 26, 2013

Hey, comic book world. These are the books I'm super excited for this week. We probably have different opinions, which is why this is the perfect opportunity for you to cruise it on over to the comments and strike up a healthy discussion about this week's most exciting books!

If you want a comprehensive list of everything that’s coming out this week and not just my own picks for what’s hot, check out Diamond’s shipping list.

Justice League #23 - $3.99

Whether or not you read the big spoilers from a couple of weeks back, Justice League #23 concludes the epic Trinity War storyline with some surprises in tow. Leading into Villain’s Month (starting next week!) and Forever Evil, DC Comics has got big things planned for the bad guys, and it all starts with this concluding chapter.

The first official event of the New 52 all starts here.

American Vampire Anthology #1 - $7.99

It’s been a grueling wait for American Vampire’s official return, but luckily Vertigo has kept us satisfied with a few releases this summer – first with the great Long Road to Hell one-shot and now with this star-studded anthology.

Featuring the likes of Jeff Lemire, Gail Simone, Greg Rucka, and Becky Cloonan in addition to new material from series creators Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque, this anthology should definitely hold over fans until the official return of Skinner Sweet and Pearl.

FF #11 - $2.99

FF11-610x925By Matt Fraction & Mike Allred | Marvel

Though it was unexpected, it turns out that this is Matt Fraction’s last issue of FF. The series will continue on written by Lee Allred from Fraction’s plot, but it’s still a bummer to lose the Fraction/Allred dynamic. This has been a favorite of mine since the Marvel NOW! launch so naturally I’m sad to see it get changed up so soon.

That said, I have every confidence in the Allreds to continue making this book something to look forward to. Especially if Ms. Thing sticks around.

Wolverine and the X-Men #35 - $3.99

WOLVXMEN2011035_DC11_LR-1By Jason Aaron & Nick Bradshaw | Marvel

The Hellfire Saga has been a hell of a ride thus far, so I’m looking forward to the sure-to-bat-s***-crazy conclusion to Jason Aaron’s latest story arc. Wolverine and the X-Men has been my favorite X-book in many, many moons and I love that the status quo is constantly in flux. Worrying about whether or not my favorite characters will make it to graduation outside of a casket is part of what fuels my love for this book.

That, and BAMFs.

Itty Bitty Hellboy #1 - $2.99

ittybittyhellboy1By Art Baltazar & Franco | Dark Horse

It’s Hellboy! But small and adorable!

If you’re a fan of Baltazar and Franco’s other works like Tiny Titans, Superman Family Adventures, and Aw Yeah Comics, this will be right up your alley whether you’re the world’s biggest Hellboy fan or a total newcomer. Their lighthearted approach and all-ages humor is not only refreshing in today’s comic book climate but also impossibly cute to look at.
