Microsoft today announced the Season Pass Guarantee program, allowing Xbox 360 owners who upgrade to an Xbox One to take certain Season Passes with them across console generations.
The program is straightforward enough: Purchase the Season Pass for a game you own on Xbox 360, and you'll be able to download that same Season Pass DLC content when you buy an Xbox One and an Xbox One version of the game in question. Season Passes typically offer a discount over buying the included DLC individually; combined with this, they become an even better deal for gamers committed to buying all of the DLC for a game and moving to an Xbox One version at some point.
Activision, Electronic Arts, and Ubisoft are already on board with the program, which will apply to certain games released in 2013 and 2014.
Call of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4 are the first two titles confirmed to support the program, the latter of which also allows for stats to be transferred across generations. Additional publishers and games will be announced "in the coming months."
Both Ghosts and Battlefield 4 will also allow for their Season Passes to be taken from PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4, although Sony has not made any formal announcement about the ability to do this with any other games.
Making it easier for gamers to transition from current-gen consoles to next-gen hardware is a wise move on Microsoft and Sony's part. The prices of the new systems and accessories being what they are, any way to ease the burden for those wanting to continue buying current-gen games and then upgrade to a One or PS4 is a good thing.
On a similar note, GameStop recently announced it would be offering PowerUp members a guaranteed $50 in credit for certain Xbox 360 games -- Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Madden 25, FIFA 14, and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag -- traded in toward the purchase of the Xbox One version of that game.
