Warners & Guy Ritchie Team for Empire Rising

Warner Bros. has picked up the feature rights to Empire Rising, a period novel written by Thomas Kelly set during the construction of the Empire State Building. The film will be developed as a potential directing vehicle for Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Sherlock Holmes).

THR says that Kelly will adapt his novel for the screen, with Ritchie and his partner Lionel Wigram producing. Set in 1930, Empire Rising tells the story of an "epic love triangle." On one side is an Irish immigrant and steelworker on the building, Michael Briody; on the other is Johnny Farell, a bagman for Mayor Jimmy Walker. Caught between them is the fetching Grace Masterson, a New York City-based artist.

Niija Kuykendall will oversee the project for Warners, and Peter Eskelsen will executive produce.

Ritchie, meanwhile, is also set to direct The Man from U.N.C.L.E. for Warners.
