App Store Update: October 4

Every day hundreds of new apps make their debut on the App Store, and hundreds more are updated or reduced in price. We have sifted through the noise and highlighted those select few that might be worth your attention.

Game Debuts

Zaxxon Escape – ($0.99)

Sega's Zaxxon was one of the original coin-op greats, a 1982 shooter that looked nothing like the competition back in that era's arcades thanks to its unique isometric perspective. The company has now revived the brand for its 30th anniversary with Zaxxon Escape, with a more modern interpretation of the IP that has more in common with Temple Run that the old-school Zaxxon experience – you'll tilt to steer your ship through a cramped corridor of obstacles, trying to make it out of the Zaxxon fortress alive.

Hum a Song – (Free)

Here's a new way to have some goofy fun with your friends – it's a "Name that Tune" app that asks you to hum part of a song, then sends a recording of your humming out to others so they can try to guess which song you were attempting to perform. It's free, so give it a look (and a listen):

Stunt Star: The Hollywood Years – ($2.99)

A world famous Hollywood stunt man is having his life flash before his eyes, and it's up to you to take control of his memories so his reminiscences of past legendary stunts go off without a hitch.

MatrixDefender – ($0.99)

The App Store's latest tower defense design separates itself from the pack with the inclusion of "Hell Mode," an endless challenge that sends never-ending waves of enemies against you until you die. How long can you survive?

Snail Bob – ($0.99)

Chillingo's latest effort introduces us to Snail Bob, the world's slowest, slimiest hero. He's on a constant, continuous crawl forward, and it's up to you to interact with switches and buttons on the screen to make sure his path is safe and free of traps.

Grow Away! – ($0.99)

And Chillingo's second new release of the day calls to mind Plants vs. Zombies, except this time it's Vegetables vs. Monsters. Join the team of healthy foods and fight off the bad guys:

Payback⊃2; – ($3.99)

It's been nearly four years since the original Payback first launched in the App Store, which is basically an eternity in Apple time – the App Store was still in its infancy back then. But Payback made a big splash in that early era by offering app shoppers an experience similar to Grand Theft Auto – check out our review from back then. Payback⊃2; (that's Payback Squared, not Payback Two) is the long-awaited sequel, and offers a more refined GTA-like experience, with a side helping of wacky racing.

Sugar Kid – ($0.99)

Sugar Kid is a sentient cube of sugar, wandering back and forth on the bottom of the screen. It's up to you to draw umbrella-like lines above his head to protect him from the downpour of vile, sugar-dissolving liquids spilling down from above.

Tentacles: Enter the Dolphin – ($0.99)

Here's a rare occurrence: Tentacles actually launched as a Windows Phone exclusive last year, and now Microsoft is publishing a port in Apple's App Store. Yeah, exactly. It's an actual Microsoft-published, honest-to-goodness game on iPhone and iPad, not just something like the Kinectimals port from a while back. It looks pretty snazzy in its new home with its new subtitle, too, so give it a glance:

Re-Volt Classic – ($5.99)

This one might ring a bell for some of you – Re-Volt was originally released back in 1999 to a variety of platforms, and proved particularly impressive on PC. Now its interpretation of racing RC cars is back for an encore in the App Store.

Burrito Bison – ($0.99)

Finally, we have Burrito Bison. This is the latest design from Ravenous Games, the same team that made League of Evil and Burger Cat. You'll launch your burly, buffalo-headed luchador and try to get him to cover as much distance as possible, maintaining his momentum by bouncing off the heads of gummi bears running around frantically on the ground below.

Price Drops

Cut the Rope: Experiments HD – ($0.99)

The iPad version of the popular Cut the Rope sequel is on sale for three dollars off, matching the iPhone edition's standard 99 cent pricetag. We like this design a lot, so hop on board and help Om Nom eat some candy.

N.O.V.A. 3 – ($0.99)

One of the App Store's best-looking shooters has had its price slashed, making it six dollars cheaper than normal. Watch our video review and decide for yourself whether what you see is worth a single buck:

Rebuild – ($0.99)

Rebuild is a different kind of zombie game. Instead of focusing on action and zombie headshots, the title instead focuses on the strategic side of surviving a zombie apocalypse. Rebuild's gameplay is turn-based. Players must make tough decisions between fortifying their base, growing food, or going on the offensive to clear out undead and reclaim more territory. With multiple difficulty levels and several endings, gamers have plenty of reason to play through the title more than once.

The Amazing Spider-Man – ($0.99)

The tie-in game to this summer's Spider-Man film franchise reboot has dropped its price down to under a buck. (It's like going to see the flick at the dollar theater!)

8-Bit Zombie – (Free)

This 2D, retro-styled, side-scrolling zombie shooter has gone free, two months after it debuted.

LostWinds – (Free)

Finally, a freebie no one should miss. LostWinds was one of the absolute standouts among the downloadable library on Nintendo's Wii, and this iOS edition is just as magical. There's no reason at all to miss it!

Updates

Where's My Perry? – ($0.99)

Version 1.1.0 has launched, and with it comes 20 new missions for the intrepid Agent P. Help him out, won't you?

That's all for today! If you haven't already, consider subscribing to the App Store Update via email. It's extra convenient!
