Character Descriptions for S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Series Revealed

With Joss Whedon saying that his S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series will focus on a new group of character, as opposed to those already introduced the Marvel Cinematic Universe it will tie into, TVLine.com has the first info on just who these new characters will be.

The first thing that Marvel fans will notice is that none of these names are familiar from the comics. No Clay Quartermain, no Contessa, no Jimmy Woo, etc…

My two thoughts on that are:

A: Perhaps Whedon really does intend to have the focal characters in this series be brand new. I seriously doubt that means no pre-existing Marvel characters will appear, but simply that the initial series regulars will be newly-created characters. Lest we forget, the beloved Agent Coulson from the Marvel movies, who played a notable role in Whedon’s Avengers film, was not from the comics either.

B: There’s always a chance these are not the true character names we’ll see in the series and are being used as placeholders, as the pilot begins casting - for the actual names, which would be familiar from the comics. This is not an unheard of move with a high-profile project like S.H.I.E.L.D.

Either way, here are TVline’s descriptions. The next big question of course is who will be cast in these roles?

Skye: This late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.

Agent Grant Ward: Quite the physical specimen and “cool under fire,” he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He’s a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he’s the kind of guy that grows on you.

Agent Althea Rice: Also known as “The Calvary,” this hard-core soldier has crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot. But her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged.

Agent Leo Fitz and Agent Jemma Simmons: These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other’s company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies – she deals with biology and chemistry, he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.
