Grown Ups 2 Tracking Higher Than Pacific Rim

Is it possible that Grown Ups 2 could beat Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim at the box office come July 12? More importantly, is this the end of days?

According to Variety, "disappointing" early tracking data shows that Sony's comedy sequel starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock and David Spade is currently outpacing Warners and Legendary's monsters vs. robots pic. Both movies open the same weekend.

IGN Heads to the Set of Pacific Rim

Why the low tracking for Pacific Rim? Despite the studios' big promotional push since last summer's San Diego Comic-Con, the $200 million-budgeted tentpole has reportedly been struggling to excite moviegoers before its release in the coming weeks. While the film has certainly been getting a lot of buzz online amongst fanboys, Pacific Rim still has two major obstacles to overcome: a lack of serious star power and the fact that it's a completely original project with no familiar source material preceding it.

Nevertheless, one would think that its high-concept premise alone would earn it some points, not to mention the acclaimed director backing it up. Alas, only time will tell if del Toro's latest can -- in the words of Idris Elba -- cancel the apocalypse.
