Dutch-based indie studio Vlambeer confirms Wasteland Kings as its next game, our friends at IGN Benelux have learned.
Wasteland Kings will be a roguelike that has players control mutants as they fight their way through randomly generated monster-loaded worlds. It was first conceived as a game jam demo during Mojam 2013, a gaming jam for charities hosted by Minecraft-developer Markus Persson in Stockholm. Wasteland Kings will be available through Steam Early Access; other platforms have yet to be confirmed.
“After the jam, there was this itch to work on this project again and again”, says Vlambeer's co-founder Rami Ismail. “We worked on it during the development of Luftrausers, and just had so much fun creating this world. It’s a very joyful game, and a platform that easily incorporates the different gameplay ideas we have. It also seemed to tell us something about ourselves and our studio, about the way we build games. The Wasteland Kings world throws random situations at your feet, which leave you clueless when you’re unprepared. But when you read into the situations, the objectives become clear, and you grow into this game by playing it. That sort of works as a metaphor for what we’ve been up to the last three years.”
True to the nature of Mojam, most of the development of Wasteland Kings will be livestreamed at wastelandkings.com. "Twice a week/fingers crossed" the Vlambeer duo Ismail and Jan Willem Nijman will share progress on the game with fans. Ismail explains. “One of the lessons of the cloning ordeal (of Radical Fishing) we went through was how it helps us to be open about everything, to disguise nothing. Also, Wasteland Kings is a framework that somehow allows us to incorporate every fun idea we can think of. Or anyone can think of, for that matter: the live stream should lead to some pretty weird ideas from the audience, who will be able to see if and how their idea makes it into the game. We think it will be fun.”
