The Unfinished Swan Was Way Over Budget and Schedule

The Unfinished Swan – a PSN-exclusive title and one of IGN’s Game of the Year 2012 nominations – is by no means a long or robust game. In fact, it can easily be beaten in about two hours. But that didn’t stop the team behind it, Giant Sparrow, from going well over budget (and time) to get the product out.

At a panel given at GDC by Giant Sparrow’s founding member and creative director Ian Dallas – in which he spoke a great deal about what it was like to create the game, what he learned while doing it, et cetera – he revealed that his studio missed both its financial and timing targets multiple times.

“This game came in something like three or four hundred percent over budget and over schedule,” Dallas explained when talking about how and why he and his company signed an exclusivity deal with Sony. “So take everything I say with a big grain of salt,” he concluded, eliciting laughter in the audience.

We adored The Unfinished Swan here at IGN -- we gave it a 9.0 -- and its next game, the second title in the studio’s three game deal with Sony, is called Edith Finch. Unfortunately, we have little information on it otherwise, but we hope to have it soon!
