Man of Steel LEGO: A Closer Look

The Man of Steel is now less than a week away, and for many fans, the anticipation is getting nearly unbearable. To make the time go a littler faster you can check out our Top 25 Superman Stories of All-Time, watch a 13-minute Man of Steel making-of featurette or listen to Henry Cavill's thoughts on more Superman movies.

Or--and this is the most fun of all--you can clack together some awesome Man of Steel LEGO. There are three movie-based sets to choose from ripped directly from scenes from the film. We take a closer look at the sets and mini-figures below:

Superman: Black Zero Escape

Man of Steel is at its heart a science fiction movie and two of the three sets are heavily sci-fi themed. This is a fun set with great mini-figures (love little details, like Lois' vest) and does a good job of replicating one of the key scenes in the movie. Bonus points for the awesome drawing of the floating Superman mini figure on the box... Don't know why that gets me.

Here's a closer look at the pieces of the set:

The pod has a clear door that opens and the ladder pivots. Pew pew pew noises will have to be added by the toy enthusiast.

Surprisingly stable at the base.

The turret fires by pushing the missiles through the back. We've seen this on plenty of other modern sets, from Iron Man to Star Wars.

The Superman figures in these sets are awesome and perfectly reflect the new suit. The Zod character has a removable helmet and a gun. He's violent like that.

Superman: Metropolis Showdown

The smallest and least expensive of the three sets, this one features a simple tableau of Superman squaring off against Zod (sans armor this time). As with most mini-figures these days, the heads feature two expressions, and in this case, we get to see Superman's heat vision eyes, which look pretty menacing.

Here's a closer look at the elements in this smaller set:

The tower in the set breaks away and there is a little lever that can flip the car for maximum LEGO carnage.

A close-up of the sports car included in this set.

Both of these guys are primed for intense battle. Note the aforementioned heat vision eyes.

Superman Battle of Smallville

The battle mentioned in the title is one of the key action set pieces in the film. The alien craft is the centerpiece, and it's a brilliant work of art. Three hatch doors open with spaces for mini-figures, the stabilizers at the back of the back of the craft open up and are poseable, and it fires rubber darts that actually shoot with some punch. Plus, there's Col. Hardy's Jeep and five mini-figures! If you're only going to get one Man of Steel set, this is the one.

Let's take a look at this set up close:

Col. Hardy's ride has missiles that can be pushed through the back to fire.

Here is Zod's craft all closed up. The gun on the bottom pivots and the stabilizers at the back open up and can move also pivot forward. All three hatches open and the two antennae are also poseable.

Hatches open, stabilizers open and Kryptonian mini-figures on display.

From left: Faora, Tor-An, Superman, Colonel Hardy, and General Zod. Zod and Faora have optional battle armor (pictured in the previous photo).

Stay tuned for lots more about Man of Steel in the next week. including our movie review. Until then, happy collecting!
