Star Trek Into Darkness Debuts Atop Weekend Box Office

While it didn't make the $100 million Paramount predicted, Star Trek Into Darkness debuted Thursday with a four-day haul of $84.1 million. Going by strictly the weekend numbers, the sequel made an estimated $70.6 million.

So depending on how you want to spin it with its number of days, that's either slightly better or slightly worse than the 2009 Trek reboot's $79.2 million opening ($75.2 million plus another $4 million from Thursday night previews).

What can't be disputed is the film's performance overseas where Star Trek Into Darkness trounced what the reboot grossed in its opening. Star Trek Into Darkness has earned $80.5 million internationally so far (an 80% improvement over the reboot) for a worldwide cume of $164.6 million.

Here are the domestic weekend estimates via Rentrak:

  1. Star Trek Into Darkness $70.6 million
  2. Iron Man 3 $35.2 million
  3. The Great Gatsby $23.4 million
  4. Pain & Gain $3.1 million
  5. The Croods $2.8 million
  6. 42  $2.7 million
  7. Oblivion $2.2 million
  8. Mud $2.2 million
  9. Peeples $2.2 million
  10. The Big Wedding $1.1 million
