Dan Harmon Says He's Been Asked to Return to Community

Well, now things are getting interesting.

In the wake of Community getting renewed for Season 5, there was a report, originating at Deadline, that Sony and NBC were considering bringing the show's ousted creator back. It seemed highly unlikely, given the circumstances of Dan Harmon's departure... but now Harmon reportedly is confirming the offer has at least been made.

HollyWookie.com (love that name, BTW) reports that they were at Harmon’s live recording of his podcast, Harmontown, last night in LA and write, “Dan Harmon just told the audience of his podcast Harmontown that he has been asked to return to Community! As soon as Dan said it, he asked that it be edited out of the podcast and it was just for us audience members (and I wasn’t going to say a word) but soon after that Dan said ‘Ahhh, f**k it. I don’t care who knows!’”

They add Harmon, “jokingly said that he would only return if they brought Chevy Chase back too but even he couldn’t stop laughing at that idea.”

Harmon revealing he’s been asked isn’t the same as a deal being made of course – but it certainly is notable that the opportunity is there. It’s also amusing that Harmon is talking openly about the potential for a deal at his podcast, as it was his playing an excerpt of Chevy Chase’s angry voice mail at such an event that led to it getting leaked wide. Though it’s also this sort of uncensored behavior that likely didn’t make him a favorite with Sony and NBC...

Could we get a return of this sort of brilliance?

Since Community's renewal, it's been notable that we’ve heard no concrete news on who would be running Community or writing for it in Season 5 yet, indicating that was still all in flux.

Community fans would be thrilled to have Harmon back (I know I would), but the question is, does Harmon want to return at this point? If he does, it certainly would be another crazy chapter in the behind-the-scenes turbulence that has been Community, especially in this past year. Under Harmon, the show was so inspired, it’s difficult to not hope a deal can be made, for the good of Greendale…
