CW President Comments on Amazon/Wonder Woman and Says Batman Still Off Limits

The CW is currently in development on Amazon, a potential series that would focus on a young Diana, destined to become Wonder Woman. Officially, Amazon -- which is being written by TV and comic book veteran Allan Heinberg -- has not been ordered as a pilot, but The CW is already doing casting on the project to find a lead actress, which is obviously an indication they are highly likely to move forward.

Asked about Amazon today at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour, CW president Mark Pedowitz said, “First off, we’re waiting to see the script. Second off, we’re busy casting for Diana as we speak. Hopefully the script works the way we want.” He added that Amazon was, “an origination story in the sense that Smallville was an origination story.”

Arrow has turned into The CW’s biggest hit since The Vampire Diaries and I asked Pedowitz if that show’s success helps Amazon’s profile as The CW looks at potential new series – and whether they might be looking at other DC characters. Replied Pedowitz, “Arrow’s success, when you have Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg as your showrunners, that has a lot to do with that success and we hope Allan Heinberg will have the same success with what Amazon will be. But it does help, in terms of that.”

Pedowitz added, “In terms of other DC characters, we will explore other DC characters, but we also do a lot of exploration of a lot of other material with a lot of other great producers. “

There is currently a Justice League movie in the works that will also presumably feature Wonder Woman and as far as working any conflicts out, Pedowitz noted, “We worked carefully with Warner Bros. to make sure Warner Bros. theatrical was onboard so we were able to get it done. You want to work carefully with your studio to make sure that it works and that it doesn’t interfere with their projects.”

It was well known that Warner Bros., DC and possibly Christopher Nolan himself would not allow any use of Bruce Wayne/Batman on live-action TV the past decade, including any guest appearances on Smallville. With Nolan’s trilogy over, Pedowitz was asked if they might finally be able to do a Bruce Wayne or Batman-themed TV series, as was once in the works years ago (that project morphed into Smallville). Said Pedowitz, “At this time, no. And regarding your next question, regarding is Batman going to make a trip to [Arrow’s] Starling City, they’re not in the same state.” Pedowitz's humorous way of addressing it aside, suffice to say, don't hold your breath for any Batman appearances on Arrow anytime soon. The Dark Knight is sticking to the big screen.

As for whether Amazon could be set in the same world as Arrow, Pedowitz remarked, “I think they all could exist in the same world, but whether they do or they don’t is depending on what the showrunner wants to do.”

With casting already underway, I asked Pedowitz if it was safe to assume Amazon was going to get a pilot at the least. He replied, “If we get the right script and the right casting, we’ll go right forward to pilot.”
