CW President Comments on Supernatural and Nikita's Renewal Prospects

The CW has yet to officially renew any series for next season, though there are obviously a couple of no-brainer decisions – as it’s certain their two biggest series, The Vampire Diaries and Arrow, will be back.

It’s also assumed Supernatural is most likely returning. Despite being in its eighth year, the series is one of the network’s best performers and its move to Wednesday nights this season, paired with Arrow, has been a successful one.

Asked about Supernatural’s status today at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour, The CW’s president, Mark Pedowitz, said, “No determination’s been made. We are pleased with how Wednesday night completely has worked out with Arrow being a bona fide hit and Supernatural actually gaining viewers back again. I think creatively the show’s in a great place and there’s always a good shot that [a renewal] could happen.”

As to how long it might be before a decision is made, Pedowitz noted, “I would like to see our schedule come back on [with new episodes] next week, which we start on Monday and over the next couple of weeks we’ll make the determination on what will come back for next fall.” Supernatural returning would of course be tied into securing leads Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, but Pedowitz revealed, “The studio has locked them in,” which is another very good sign the show is probably coming back.

Things are a bit more murky for Nikita, whose numbers are much lower. But the show has been in an unusual situation this fall, not only airing on a tough night, Friday, but lately without any original programming paired with it.

I asked Pedowitz about the show’s status and his answer helped give this Nikita fan some cautious optimism. Said Pedowitz, “When we moved it to 8 o'clock, it actually started to perform better than it was at its 9 o'clock time period. It's performing on par to our expectation. I'm a fan of the show. I like the show. But again, it's performing at par.”
