Daniel Way and Phil Noto Talk Thunderbolts

Last week, we brought you the "Explosive" new teaser for Thunderbolts, which not only revealed Punisher and Elektra going at it, but also announced that artist Phil Noto would be joining the series for an arc in March. We had a quick chat with Noto and Thunderbolts scribe Daniel Way to find out what they've got in store for the T-bolts.

IGN Comics: So. Punisher and Elektra smoochin’. What’s the deal?

Daniel Way: Oh, that? Just a couple of sociopaths sharing a moment, is all... I’m sure it’s completely harmless. Since when has such a thing ever resulted in anything but happiness and sunshine?

IGN: Is this a relationship that’s going to impact their role on the Thunderbolts team? Is that a negative or a positive for them?

Way: Who said there was a relationship? That’s exactly the kind of vaguely-formed assumption that could end up causing untold amounts of physical and emotional carnage.

IGN: Most of these characters aren’t typically known for playing well with others, particularly in the case of someone like Frank Castle. Is that something you’re trying to incorporate into the series?

Way: That IS the series.

IGN: Is there any particular character you’re having the most fun writing? Or drawing, in Phil’s case?

Way: Currently, that position is held by Samuel Sterns, soon to be known to the Marvel Universe as Red Leader.

Phil Noto: I love drawing Elektra. I've always been a huge fan of the character and being able to draw her in actual panels rather than just a pin up has been a thrill for me.

IGN: Punisher and Elektra is certainly a surprising pairing – are there any other characters that have surprised you in how well they pair together?

Way: Again, you’re probably assuming too much. That being said, Mercy and Red Leader seem to have a lot of common goals.

IGN: Daniel, you wrote Deadpool for quite a while – how does writing the character solo compare to writing him within a group dynamic?

Way: It’s very different. In Thunderbolts, you’re “watching” Deadpool as opposed to “being” Deadpool, which is the approach I took with his solo series.

IGN: Phil, how did you wind up on the book? Is this an ongoing gig for you?

Noto: I worked with Jordan White, the editor, on Uncanny X-Force and he asked me if I'd be interested in doing an arc on Thunderbolts after UXF. I gladly accepted the offer since it had a bunch of cool characters that I wanted to draw and was being written by the great Dan Way. I'm on for at least one arc and maybe more. We'll see...

IGN: How is drawing the team dynamics of the Thunderbolts different from that of something like Uncanny X-Force? Is there something that might work for X-Force but not Thunderbolts or vice versa?

Noto: I feel like the Thunderbolts team is a bunch Wolverine-types, with the exception of Deadpool, who are all kind of the alphas in their little worlds. These lone wolf characters having to team up is part of what makes it such an interesting book. There's a lot more subtle acting with this bunch, but I love that.
