Showtime today confirmed the news from yesterday on their straight to series pick up (bypassing the pilot stage) on a new series from the powerhouse duo of writer John Logan and director Sam Mendes, coming off their blockbuster pairing on Skyfall.
The show’s interesting name is Penny Dreadful – an odd choice at a glance, but one that fits the show’s time and setting. A penny dreadful was a type of British crime/horror fiction in the late 19th century released in installments that cost one penny each.
The series Penny Dreadful is set in turn of the century London, with a League of Extraordinary type team-up of famous horror characters including Dracula, Van Helsing, Dorian Gray, Dr. Frankenstein and possibly Jack the Ripper.
Showtime’s president, David Nevins, noted that Logan, who also wrote Gladiator, Hugo and The Aviator (and is going to write the next two Bond films) is going to write every episode of Penny Dreadful.
Describing Logan as, “one of the pre-eminent screenwriters,” Nevins said he’s “been obsessed with monsters in literature since childhood. It’s a show that he’s always wanted to do. I’ve been wooing him to Showtime.”
Despite the bigger than life characters, Nevins described Penny Dreadful as, “very realistic. It’s very grounded. This is not Bela Lugosi. The characters all have very human form, all around turn of the century London.”
As for who the main character is, Nevins remarked, “There will be probably one central point of view character more than the others, but it’s going to be fairly ensemble. It’s ultimately an ensemble in the way that Downton Abbey is an ensemble. It’s very psychological. I think it’s going to be highly erotic. And it’s my hope and intention that Sam Mendes is going to direct it. “
