Michael Winner Dies Aged 77

Michael Winner – director of the hugely successful Death Wish series – has died at the age of 77 after a long battle with liver disease.

Winner, who also worked as a newspaper columnist and restaurant critic, died at his London home.

Born in Hampstead in 1935, Winner started out as a film critic before going on to direct more than 30 movies of his own.

Death Wish – a violent revenge drama that starred Charles Brosnon – was his biggest hit, and he went on to direct two equally violent sequels.

Other films of note include The Mechanic, which also starred Bronson, and the 1978 version of The Big Sleep, in which Robert Mitchum played private eye Philip Marlowe.

In recent years Winner wrote restaurant reviews for The Sunday Times and appeared in a series of cult adverts for an insurance company on British TV.

Chris Tilly is the Entertainment Editor for IGN in the UK and reckons that the world is a less interesting place without Winner in it. His words can be found on both Twitter and MyIGN.
