All Today's Nintendo News in One Place

Despite a Nintendo Direct that mainly focused on release dates for highly anticipated games, there was still one piece of absolutely massive news: Nintendo and SEGA have signed an exclusive worldwide deal to produce three Sonic games, two of which have been announced. To get more on this, as well as anything else you may have missed from today's Iwata-led presentation, click on the links below.

SEGA and Nintendo Sign a Deal

Easily the biggest news from today, and so as good a place as any to start. SEGA and Nintendo have signed a deal to produce three new Sonic games, two of which have been announced. They are Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games (which wins this year's award for the catchiest title ever) and Sonic: Lost World.

While we know a fair bit about the former, including that it'll be coming to Wii U only and the full list of events, it's less clear what Sonic: Lost World is about. All we got there was a screenshot, the fact it's coming to Wii U and 3DS, and that it's an action-adventure platforming game. Couple that up with the fact we've no clue what the third game is and we make it speculation-o-clock!

Release Dates, Ahoy!

One of the big complaints Nintendo has been facing recently is the fact that while it may have a fair few promising titles up its sleeve, it's being infuriatingly tight-lipped about when we may actually see them. No more! As of today we know when the Wonderful 101 will be available, and the company even announced that New Super Luigi U would be getting a standalone retail release and its release date in the same Direct!

European Nintendo fans will also be pleased to know that Pikmin 3 isn't too far away for us, either. Speaking of Pikmin 3...

New Pikmin 3 Characters and Gameplay Unveiled

While we already knew we wouldn't be controlling Olimar in Pikmin 3, we didn't know that we'd instead be controlling three characters...and all at the same time. Yep, Alph, Brittany and Charlie are our new friends whose world is in peril and it falls to us and the Pikmin to help them out. There was also some muttering about the game's Challenge and Multiplayer modes too, but apparently we'll find out more about them in due course.

Out With The Mario, In With The...Nebbit?!

Finally, it seems that Mario won't be appearing in New Super Luigi U in any form. Instead, he's been replaced with a lovely little blighter called Nebbit, who plays a bit differently to other characters. While he won't be able to use power-ups, he also won't be able to be damaged, making him perfect for younger players or those still learning the ropes.

And that's it! Sure, there weren't any huge announcements but the promise of THREE new Sonic games is pretty exciting, right? Nintendo has also confirmed that we'll be hearing much more at the next Nintendo Direct "around the time of E3". We'll see you there!
