David Elliot and Paul Lovett, co-writers of 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, have filed a massive copyright infringement suit again Paramount, MGM, Hasbro and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. In their complaint, the writers claim that much of this year's G.I. Joe: Retaliation was "stolen" from their ideas. They're seeking $23 million in damages.
Following the release of the first G.I. Joe in 2009, Elliot and Lovett were asked by the studios to present "plotlines, themes, characters and more for a potential sequel." Following that, the writers' work was allegedly incorporated into Retaliation without giving them any credit.
"Even the most cursory review of the Joe Retaliation Movie and the Plaintiffs' Work reveals that they are substantially similar in every material way," the lawsuit says.
The complaint also goes into detail about how "nearly every aspect of the Joe Retailiation Movie, from the beginning to the end" plagiarizes their work, offering side-by-side comparisons of the similarities.
The lawsuit seeks at least $20 million in actual damages and a minimum of $3 million in compensatory damages. Paramount declined to comment on the situation.
