The book’s opening pages are a breathtaking splash of vibrant colors and creative paneling, two stylistic traits that are carried throughout the issue. The star of the show is Hawkeye the Younger, Kate Bishop, who crosses paths with a deceptively charming fellow with a dark past. The dialogue is snappy and cleverly paced and by the conversation’s end, Kate proves why she is, in her own words, the hero of this story.
The plot unravels slowly, as Fraction layers the past over the present, until the final few pages align neatly with the previous’ issue’s ending. There’s a poetic quality to Fraction’s storytelling that makes Hawkeye #10 one of the most unique comics on stands this week. So often, writers of mainstream superhero books power through plot, events tumbling over one another in a rush. Fraction takes his time to let his story percolate as characters move through each other’s lives as interlocking puzzle pieces.
Francavilla’s innovative layouts are as integral to the story as Fraction’s writing, particularly as the chaos of Kazi’s previous experiences bleed through. The panels are cleverly differentiated throughout. Rigid, rectangular grids cover the relative sanity of the present while the intense violence of the past is depicted in wickedly warped fashion.
It's a deliciously layered parfait of a comic and to divulge anything more would threaten to spoil the experience of reading it. Simply know that it’s one of the strongest issues in the series thus far and considering the consistent quality of Hawkeye, that's saying something.
