HTC Reportedly Launching Cheaper, Smaller One Variant

The HTC One is hands-down one of the best smartphones you can buy, but if the price of the new Android handset is too steep for you, a less expensive and smaller version may be one its way. As reported by Phone Arena, HTC is reportedly set to launch a One variant near the end of the second quarter, which will be a more price-conscious device for both consumers and the Taiwanese manufacturer.

Phone Arena states that the phone known internally as the HTC M4 will look almost identical to the One (which was codenamed M7), although will sport a few notable differences. The device may be built from different materials — possibly using a plastic casing instead of the aluminum body found on the One — and will be equipped with a smaller 4.3-inch 720p display.

The One's quad-core processor will purportedly be downgraded to a dual-core version, although RAM is said to stay at 2GB. HTC's Ultrapixel technology camera will reportedly make its way to the variant as well. Unlike the One, the M4 is expected to launch with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

HTC previously released low-cost versions of its flagship device — most recently with the One S and One V as alternatives to the high-end One X — so it wouldn't be far-fetched for the company to do the same this year. Between the alleged HTC One variant and the long-rumored low-cost iPhone, things are looking good for frugal consumers on the search for a premium smartphone experience.
