iOS 7's Rumored Redesign: Flat is Fabulous

Rumors have been bubbling up all year that tease Apple has more in store for iOS 7 than just a couple of add-ons, and a report from 9to5Mac indicates that we may be in for a whole new look. Sources say that Apple Senior Vice President of Industrial Design Jony Ive has conducted a big overhaul, throwing out heavy textures in favor of a sleeker UI.

Bye bye, Game Center?

According to sources speaking with 9to5Mac, Ive has expressed disdain for the skeuomorphic textures of iOS apps like Game Center, and plans to drop them in favor of sleeker, black and white features. But the gaudy look of green felt isn't the only thing on the chopping block. Sources have also pointed to a full redesign of the iOS lock screen (chucking the transparent lock feature and square PIN pad), dropping linen features in the Notification Center, and nixing the shine on the Apple home screen.

But iOS 7 is as much about adding features as taking them away. Sources indicate that the Cupertino company is testing out the inclusion of widgets in the notification window, such as bluetooth toggling, to make it more useful overall. The Weather app may also have some extra-fancy design changes, incorporating subtle animations and ambient looks. Each stock app will have a new look that varies slightly, to keep the UI consistent.

Rumors are also swirling about improvements to Maps and Siri, and well as integration of new apps like Flickr and Vimeo. But all will become clearer and we inch towards to release date of the new OS, rumored to happen sometime this fall.

What do you think of iOS 7? Let us know in the comments.
