App Store Update: November 29

Every day hundreds of new apps make their debut on the App Store, and hundreds more are updated or reduced in price. We have sifted through the noise and highlighted those select few that might be worth your attention.

Game Debuts

Jet Set Radio – ($4.99)

Sega’s Dreamcast classic all about rollerblading, graffiti and killer music returns in new app form – and you may be amazed at how well it handles, even running on buttonless hardware.

Street Fighter X Tekken Gauntlet – (Free)

A new sample-sized serving of Capcom’s recent crossover fighter, “Gauntlet” puts you in command of either Ryu or Kazuya for a string of fast battles. It’s limited, but it’s free, and Capcom is probably hoping it’ll be enough of a taste to encourage your purchase of the full game.

Flashout 3D – ($1.99)

Sony’s Wipeout series is back! Well, almost – but it’s clear that’s the reaction the new “Flashout” is intended to elicit. Give it a look and see if the PlayStation part of your brain doesn’t kick immediately into gear:

Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders – ($4.99)

The gorgeous aerial dogfighting of the Sky Gamblers series is back in this all-new sequel.

Writer Rumble – ($0.99)

The greatest literary legends in history are at each others’ throats, trying to prove their superior skill at forming vocabulary words. Have at you, sir!

Word Derby – ($0.99)

If you’d rather put together words with the framing of a horse race instead of a fighting game, though, check out Chillingo’s new Word Derby.

Team Awesome – ($0.99)

Our Must-Watch Trailer Of The Week Award™ goes to Team Awesome. Must watch!

Zen Shapes: The Way of the Brush – ($0.99)

OK, I take the award back. Turns out there are two must-watch trailers this week. Check out the finger-waving, ink-haired old man in Zen Shapes:

Sky Hero – ($0.99)

Play as a part-courageous, part-ridiculous hero who saves the day by leaping off the tops of tall towers in Sky Hero. Look out below!

Vectrex – (Free)

You’ve got to be pretty old-school to remember the Vectrex video game system, but the stand-alone, vector-graphics little console is still loved by many (myself included.) This new app collects its vintage library into a new touch-controlled compilation. You’re given Minestorm for free, then offered the option to purchase additional Vectrex games via micro-transaction.

Freeze! – (Free)

Tilt and turn a set of creepy, monochromatic cages to help an eyeball hero escape. Weird, but definitely intriguing.

Towers & Dungeons – (Free)

In this unique twist on the tower-building genre, you can choose which direction you want to build – either up into the sky, or down into the depths of the earth.

The Bowling Dead – (Free)

I give a lot of flack to zombie games, because I think the undead are ridiculously overused in gaming today. Even so, The Bowling Dead is an idea that gets a thumbs-up from me. Line ‘em up and knock ‘em down.

Price Drops

Flick Golf! – (Free)

We’ve got a couple of freebies to point out, as usual, with today’s duo led by Flick Golf. The name tells you everything you need to know.

FreeSkate Xtreme – (Free)

Also free today, appropriately enough, is FreeSkate Xtreme. This one boasts a Kinect-like control scheme that tracks your head movement. Worth a look for no money down, certainly.

God of Blades – ($0.99)

And then we have God of Blades, which, while not totally free, has price-dropped its way down as close as you can get.

Updates

Angry Birds Star Wars – ($0.99)

Rovio’s latest is getting its first free content update today, and it’s the debut of Princess Leia! The Pink Bird has suited up as our favorite bun-haired monarch and is taking the fight to the Pigs on the ice world of Hoth.

FIFA Soccer 13 – ($6.99)

EA’s latest FIFA sim is also boasting new content today with the addition of the new FIFA Ultimate Team mode. Or FUT, as they’re promoting it. Not sure why. I think I’d stay away from using an acronym like “FUT.”

Special Shout-Out!

Wheel - Ordeal – ($0.99)

OK, so we usually wrap up these articles with the Updates section, but today we’ve got just one more bit of business – giving a special shout-out to an IGN reader named Aryan Mann. Aryan is a 14-year-old game designer who’s learning the ropes of app design and has just released a tilt-controlled driving game into the App Store. We’re highlighting it here and encouraging the rest of our readers to give it a look, because if Aryan’s already releasing apps at 14, who knows what lies ahead in the future for this enterprising young mind.

That’s it for today! If you haven't already, subscribe to the App Store Update via email. For convenience!
