Secret Avengers #34 Review

I don't understand how anyone could see a cover with Captain Britain and Hawkeye battling Cap-Wolf and Frankencastle and not want to buy the comic in question. But as deep as Rick Remender is into his final conflicts on the book, this really isn't the stage for new readers to be hopping on board. It is, however, another rousing chapter in this soon-to-be-concluded series.

Tonally, issue #34 is all over the map. An early flashback sheds more light on the inner workings of the Descendants and confirms once and for all the identity of Brother (assuming you missed Remender's interview responses on that subject some months ago). That segues into a dramatic sequences as Flash struggles to save himself and Valkyrie from perishing in the cold vacuum of space. But where all of that material is serious and dramatic, you have Hawkeye and Captain Britain hanging out on Earth-666 to completely offset the drama. The setting itself is inherently goofy, but the continual banter between the two heroes ramps up the humor even more.

So yes, this issue is chaotic and even a bit jumbled at times. Remender manages to work in every single cast member, including a couple that haven't been around lately. The plot revelations and big character moments fly fast and furious. Remender is practically racing to the finish line at this point. But despite the hectic pace, the book remains fun and dramatic in equal measure. Some of the drama is hampered a bit by the fact that the series is now well behind the curve of Marvel NOW!, but that can't really be helped.

Matteo Scalera's art seems to be suffering a bit from the strain of pushing forward to the finish. Though never centered on realism in the first place, his figure work feels a bit more loose and scratchy than usual. Still, he delivers dynamic action sequences and a generally terrific sense of mood. How many artists could so effectively juggle epic sci-fi and gothic horror elements in the same issue?
